I haven’t been able to think of a direction for this blog. I don’t want this to exist just so that I can “reblog” a bunch of pictures that I like. I’m not going to scroll through it again and say “yeah, I do like these pictures.” And I don’t think anyone who looks at my tumblr really cares anyway.

What I think I’m going to do is use this as an intensive for my creativity. I want to make something that is my own every week (at least) and post a picture, recording, description.. something. That will be good. It will shape this work in progress into what I want to be.

Here’s a pro tip: Whenever you find yourself saying, “I’m entitled…” STOP and think really hard for like eight consecutive seconds about whether you actually believe yourself to be entitled to the thing in question, and what that sense of entitlement says about you.

Happy Independence Day! Perhaps we should celebrating it by overthrowing the oppression of just one group of people each year. Like LGBT this year, women next, Hispanics….. never mind we have too many oppressed groups. That’ll take too long.

The fact is that the United States already has universal healthcare. Anyone, regardless of their coverage status or ability to pay, can go to the doctor or the ER for help. The doctors must treat them and do whatever they can to preserve the patients’ lives.

Then when billing time comes, those who are unfortunate enough to a) not receive coverage through their employer and don’t make enough to buy coverage b) are unemployed or c) have preexisting conditions must pay out of pocket. With the exorbitant rates for healthcare in the US, this frequently bankrupts people. The hospital absorbs the loss by raising their fees and further bloating our healthcare system.

In the 90’s the US decided that people had to have car insurance to drive. People who elected not to have insurance still crashed into other people and could not afford to pay to fix the cars. Their lack of insurance did not just affect them, it had consequences for people who made the smart decision to pay for insurance too.

If healthcare was truly private and competitive, doctors would not treat those who cannot pay. It makes no business sense. But healthcare doesn’t work as a private enterprise because people need it. People will continue to pay higher prices, and more people will fall into bankruptcy (driving up cost of healthcare).

An insurance mandate is necessary for our nation. Our bloated system takes away a larger portion of our GDP than any other industry. Nearly every president (liberal and conservative) has proposed some type of universal healthcare. It is a good decision for our country.

The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains by Nicholas Carr:

I’m reading this book for Lenoir-Rhyne University’s summer reading. One of the ideas that Carr discusses is the plasticity of the human brain. Every decision we make, link we click, article we read, every place we go creates, destroys, strengthens, or weakens the neural pathways in our brains. This means we are perpetually a work in progress. It is important to remember that even our most mundane actions have implications and can shape us in subtle ways.

Even blogging is training my brain to deal in small parcels of information and to move quickly from topic to topic. For all the wonders the Internet has brought us, it is good to be cautious that our ability to sit down with a good book for hours doesn’t rot away completely.
